Blake Street
on Blake Street she had a rock in her shoe for awhile
on Blake Street down about a quarter of a mile
I didn’t know her when she was livin in Denver
but by her own account it was probably better that way
she worked like a miner on the sadness inside her
down in a hole everyday
pick and a shovel she was poundin the rubble
the dust was so thick that it was makin her choke
chronic angina almost halfway to China
just how far would that rabbit hole go?
on Blake Street she had a rock in her shoe for awhile
on Blake Street down about a quarter of a mile
back on the surface little brother was nervous
so he came in from Florida to see for himself
and painted the factory that she shared with nobody
with some paints he found on a shelf
but wrapped in a sweater, well, he wasn’t much better
and neither one shared all the trouble they’d seen
yeah, with everything burning and Saturn returning
she would just have to roll up her sleeves
on Blake Street she had a rock in her shoe for awhile
on Blake Street down about a quarter of a mile
all in, fallin down
on the way, all the way down
clinical, chemical down
natural, beautiful down
cryin and cursin and her lungs nearly burstin
her spirit was strong though she’d lost a lot of weight
finally defeated her defenses retreated
left her alone at the gate
now some think depression’s a cry for attention
and every emotion’s gotta have it’s say
well, she made it to China, now that’s all behind her
yeah, that was way back in the day
on Blake Street she had a rock in her shoe for awhile
on Blake Street down about a quarter of a mile
on Blake Street, down on Blake
on Blake Street, down on Blake
